Every workshop opens with a 10-minute grounding ritual — feet, three breath cycles, orientation. The same each time, so you can arrive from anywhere.
Modern life keeps the nervous system in a low-level state of alert. Polyvagal Theory — developed by neuroscientist Stephen Porges — explains why: the autonomic nervous system has three layers, and most of us spend the majority of our time in the middle layer, mobilised and scanning for threat. The body doesn't distinguish between a deadline and a predator.
The research is clear: the fastest way to shift out of this state is not through the mind, but through the body — specifically through sensory input from the feet, slow diaphragmatic breathing, and orienting the gaze. These aren't relaxation tricks. They are direct signals to the vagus nerve.
In Qigong and Tai Chi, the feet are the first root — the point where heaven and earth meet in the body. The practice of zhan zhuang (standing like a tree) is thousands of years old, and it begins exactly here: feeling the ground, letting the weight drop, allowing the nervous system to soften.
This is not metaphor. It is a technology for coming home to yourself — one that modern neuroscience is only now learning to explain.
